Audie Bock’s Japanese Film Directors is a celebrated introduction to the filmmakers who shaped modern Japanese cinema, including Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Nagisa Oshima. Combining critical analysis with biographical insight, Bock explores the artistic styles, cultural impact, and evolving techniques of Japan’s most influential directors.

Drawing on interviews, production histories, and detailed film studies, the book traces the development of Japanese cinema from the postwar studio era through the rise of independent and avant-garde filmmaking. Accessible yet authoritative, it remains an essential work for students of film history, collectors of cinema literature, and admirers of Japanese culture. Illustrated throughout and complete with filmographies, Japanese Film Directors is widely regarded as one of the definitive English-language studies of Japanese filmmaking.
